Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park : this park was generally named after the Akagera River that flows into a labyrinth of lakes. Additionally, the relatively warm and low-lying plains of the park comprise of savannah woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes. Besides, the largely open expanse is ideal for game viewing that can be enjoyed during the game drives. Some of the animals to encounter here include; buffalo, elephant, antelope, zebra, giraffe, baboons, monkeys, etc. A boat trip on Lake Ihema is also a highlight of any visit to this park, with its large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles and abundant water birds.
What to do while at Akagera National Park
Birding
The park is a popular destination for the birders. In fact, it is a home to more than 500 bird species including the migratory birds. Birds here include; weaver birds, kingfishers, shoebill stork, swamp fly catcher, red faced barbets. Papyrus gonolek, grey crowned crane, African Wattled plover, Squacco herons, the Great Snipe, Armot Chat, etc.
Game drives
Game drives in Akagera National Park are done in early morning and afternoon whereby tourists can view various animals. Some of these include; hyenas, leopards, lions, elephants, zebras, rhinos, wild dogs. Impalas, baboons, buffalos, giraffes, antelopes, monkeys, topis, vervets, bush babies, etc. Therefore, clients can get a chance of viewing both nocturnal and diurnal animals during the different game drives. While on any game drive, you are accompanied by a trained guide who is well vast with the flora and fauna of the park. Note that, you are advised to stay within the vehicle unless the park guide notices it is safe to get out. Game drives are quite interesting, however, you are free to pack some snacks from the lodge since some game drives may seem too long.
Fishing
Spot fishing here can be done either on Lake Ihema or shakani. Most popular fish caught is Tilapia and catfish and you can also roast or cook your fish as well as enjoy your delicious meal. There are also some fishing tournaments that take place in the park every now and then and you could participate if there is one going at that time of the visit.
Boat cruise
Boat cruise here is majorly done on Lake Ihema which gives you a chance to spot aquatic animals and also enjoy the lake breeze. During the activity you will view the hippos, crocodiles, otters as well as water birds. You can as well watch other animals trying to quench their thirst on the lake fringes.
Nature walks
The park has various scenic sights that can be well appreciated up close. Here, you are given a chance to view different things closely compared to when having a game drive. While on a guided nature walk, you will come across exotic plants, colorful butterfly species, the still water in some lakes, the water birds, the smaller animals, insects and many more.

It is basically one of the park lodges found in the eastern region of Rwanda near the border of Tanzania. It is a 3 hours’ drive from the capital city Kigali and 5 hours from volcanoes national, the only home to the endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

Akagera game lodge is situated in the far eastern province about 2 hours’ drive from Kigali along the southern entrance to the park. The surrounding area is also rich with countless number of big game and other wildlife on the open savannah.
