This 2 Days Rwanda chimpanzee tracking Safari: will take you to Nyungwe Forest National Park which is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. The park is rich in biodiversity and spectacularly beautiful. There are 75 known mammals in Nyungwe, such as the mongoose, Congo clawless otter and leopard to name but a few. Memorable and photogenic moments include walking up to the Isumo waterfall or along the Canopy walk suspension bridge. Tea plantation border the edges of the park, with a habituated troop of Ruwenzori colobus monkeys at Gisakura as well as forest fringe birds. You have will have a short stopover at the ethnographic museum of Rwanda to learn more about the culture and history of the Rwandan people. You will also take on the canopy walk after your chimp trekking experience before leaving for Kigali.

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Nyungwe forest
After breakfast you will be picked up by our representative from Great Nest Image Safaris who will brief you about this 2 days Rwanda chimpanzee trekking safari. There is an optional stopover in Huye at the ethnographic museum formerly the national museum of Rwanda. Later you will have lunch and proceed to the park. You will check in your lodge and later in the afternoon you will take on the canopy walk in Nyungwe forest. The drive to Nyungwe forest is rewarding with views several hills, Lake Kivu and Kibira national park in Burundi. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the lodge.

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking
After an early morning breakfast, your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to the briefing point at the Uwinka visitor’s center in Nyungwe forest before you can start your chimpanzee tracking. Here you will be briefed about the do’s and don’ts while doing your chimp tracking. After receiving a briefing and depending on the number of people present for the chimp trek you will be divided into two groups. One will track starting at the Uwinka center and another starting at Cyamudongo – which will require your driver guide to transfer you to the starting point. Your range guide will be in communication with the trackers who live early morning to locate where the chimpanzee nested the previous night and you are allowed to stay with the chimps for only 1 hour after locating them, photography is allowed but be reminded that the flash is prohibited.

There are over 350-400 individual colobus monkeys in the park and tracking as a perfect morning activity for any visitor. Costs for tracking include: Non-residents $60, foreign-residents $40 and students foreign residents $20
- Hiking
There are 130 kilometers of well-constructed hiking trails that are found in the park. Congo Nile trial divides as the longest one, Imbaraga trial as the difficult one and Igishigishigi trail as the shortest one and hiking takes 3 hours to 3 days.
- Birding
The park is a home to over 300 bird species and 29 of them are endemic in Albertine rift including the shelly’s crimson wing, Kungwe Apalis and more.
- Tropical water fall
There are plenty of waterfalls within the Nyungwe National park the most famous and biggest one is Kamiranzovu waterfall. This is a famous activity for visitors in the park especially hikes because after 3 to 4 of the hike, they get a reward of this breathtaking tropical waterfall.

How to get to Nyungwe forest
Nyungwe forest National Park is located in South Western Rwanda close to Lake Kivu and Democratic Republic of Congo, with Burundi border in the South. It is located near Cyangungu town, about 225 km and a 4-5-hour drive from Kigali. You can either drive to the park from Kigali, or fly there.

Our standard mode of transport is by road and we use 4×4 Safari van and Land cruisers with open roof tops customized for game viewing and photography. Each Safari van/Land cruiser comes with a professionally trained driver/guide with fuel for the whole safari. Each client is entitled to a window seat and can take up to 8-10 people. We also have very comfortable super customs which can carry up 6 people with their luggage also have small vehicles like Alphads, Harrier and much more that can carry 4-5 people.
