Kibale Forest National Park
Kibale National Park : generally contains one of the loveliest and most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda. This park is famously known for chimpanzee tracking as well as over 70 mammal species and over 375 bird species. The park also harbors 13 species of primates including the chimpanzee. In addition, the park lies close to the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area. However, it is within half a day’s drive of the Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains as well as Semliki National Park.
What to do in Kibale Forest National Park
Chimpanzee tracking
After Bwindi Impenetrable Forest it is the favorite primate park to visit in Uganda. Since chimpanzee tracking is the main highlight of any visit to this park, encountering them stands at 90%. Here, you set off at Kanyanchu and hit the forest for the habituated chimps. Upon locating them, you are given 1 hour in their presence as you enjoy their daily activities. You can as well take photos and videos to take back home for remembrance.
Bigodi wetland sanctuary
Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary offers some of the finest birding and monkey viewing in Uganda. In fact most of the bird species are forest-fringe and swamp specials. Common birds to spot here include; the great blue turaco, papyrus gonolek, yellow-throated tinker birds. Grey headed Negro finch, double toothed barbet, black crowned waxbill, etc. Primates to spot include; L’hoest’s monkey, red colobus, black and white colobus, red tailed monkey, Uganda mangabey, etc.
Hiking and Nature walks
There are plenty of day-hikes in or near the park for you to enjoy the various aspects of the forest and the surrounding area. Nature walks and hikes usually abound in, near and around park. There is also a hike that traverses the length of the park where each night you sleep in a different area outside of the park.
Cave experience
The Amabere caves just a short drive are a combination of legends and nature. While here, you will enjoy the stories of old and see nature at work as you are guided on the hike to the caves and the waterfall. It is located not too far from Kibale Forest therefore, can be added on your bucket list to the Park.
The Nakayima Witch’s Tree
This is a cultural and traditional worship site that you can visit on the way to Kibale from Kampala or from Kibale to Kampala. Commonly called the Witch’s Tree it is on top of a hill with great views. It is usually used by Ugandans who come and appeal to the spirits in the case of illness, infertility, diseases and relationships.
How to get to Kibale Forest National Park
You can basically reach the southern part of Fort Portal, through Mbarara road or Kamwege road. However, according to the reviews from the travelers, the northern route to Kibale through Fort Portal is the shortest compared to the others. It is over a distance of 300km on a tarmac which goes to Fort Portal town, then a short distance of about 36km on a murrum road to Kanyanchu Visitor’s Center. Roughly from Kampala to Kibale through the northern route of Fort Portal is approximately 337km by road.
